HISTORY OF HYPNOTHERAPY

The ancient practice of hypnosis has seen many changes throughout the centuries, in how it is defined, how it is practiced and what context, and in the forces that have shaped it. Prevalent in many cultures and utilized by healers of all kinds, its origins differ from modern day practices. Additionally, the story of hypnosis has a great deal to reveal as to why there is so much confusion around what it means today.

Originated in Egypt, it fell into disrepute in the Middle Ages, when anyone (mostly women) thought to be connected to Witchcraft or other forms of natural medicine paid dearly for their beliefs. It is said to have been resurrected by an 18th century healer named Franz Anton Mesmer who was known for his charisma.

Mesmer believed in astrological principles; namely, that the planets above us have a direct influence on life on earth, by means of distinct physical forces that many considered to be measurable. He at first worked with magnets, applying them to patient’s bodies in theatrical rituals in order to cure illness. His work eventually became known as ‘magnetism’ and ‘gravitation’ – terms he adapted to describe his particular brand of healing.

However, it was the concept of ‘mesmerism’ that most came to associate him with, for obvious reasons. Mesmerism was eventually re-interpreted for religious, spiritual, scientific and entertainment purposes (the latter known today as ‘stage hypnosis’). It was highly influential in a number of movements, some of which are still known today. However, its link to occultism meant charlatan connotations for many.

Nearly a century later, it was Scottish surgeon James Braid who saw a need for change in how the practice was developed and perceived in the public eye. Considered by many to be the ‘father’ of hypnosis, he recognized the potential of mesmerism as a legitimate therapeutic technique but which required some study – as many scientists and physicians had, before and after him. He coined the word ‘hypnosis in 1843.

A divide grew between those who used hypnosis in a therapeutic manner (as an adjunct to medical treatment) and those who used it for spiritual, religious or magical purposes. Faith healing, mind cure and Christian Science were all heavily influenced by hypnosis.

It wasn’t until the 20th century that hypnosis became accepted into conventional western medicine. Many credit the work of pioneers in hypnosis research through the 1920s and 30s, then again in the 1950s and 60s. Worth noting was the work of Clark Hull and his student, Milton Erickson. (Erickson is most closely associated with clinical hypnosis today).

Hypnosis was recognized as a complimentary healing modality by the British Medical Association in 1955, the American Medical Association in 1958 and the American Psychiatric Association in 1961. It is now a widely-practiced modern therapeutic technique.

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis is an ancient practice that involves exploring the inner mind to create lasting change in our lives. As a scientifically verified technique, it is capable of affecting dramatic change in human behavior, as well as in our physical and mental well being.

Contrary to popular opinion, hypnosis is not a state of sleep. In fact it is a natural state of mind that comes about much more often in every day life than we realize. Every time we are engrossed in a good book, a sports game or some of our favorite music, for example, we are in what is referred to as a hypnotic trance.

By consciously and deliberately inducing this state of mind, we gain access to an aspect of ourselves that is more “suggestible” and therefore open to change. Hypnotherapy facilitates this process, which bypasses our everyday, conscious mind to introduce new thought patterns that change the way we live.

ABOUT HYPNOTIC TRANCE

As mentioned above, hypnotic trance is a state of mind that is much more common than many of us realize. In fact, there are those who suggest we are in trance most of the time – we just don’t recognize it, or know how to use it for our benefit. Any time we engage our imagination or move deeply into an emotional experience, we are in trance. When we sit in front of a television, we are in trance. Have you ever driven past your street – the is call the DRIVING TRANCE! The state between sleeping and waking familiar to most of us is identical to hypnotic trance. In short, any time we are in an altered state of mind (also known as being “in the zone”) or in “the daydream”, we are in hypnotic trance. Though we remain conscious and in full control, it differs from our typical hyper-conscious mindframe that propels us through busy days and long “to do” lists in a fast paced world.

Now is the time to experience hypnotherapy – connect yourself with your unconscious mind – in order to introduce ideas and suggestions that can be both healing and life altering.
